Donghui lies in the far southwest of Yunnan province, in the mountainous border region of Pu'er prefecture. On the map, the settlement appears as a compact cluster of streets set in a valley, with roads following the lie of the land as they wind toward neighbouring villages and towns.
The surrounding terrain is steep and heavily folded, so the built-up area stays close to the valley floor while the slopes are left to forest and cultivated terraces. This part of Yunnan is home to several ethnic communities and lies within one of China's well-known tea-growing regions.
