Dunkirk Map Poster & Print

Dunkirk lies on the North Sea coast of France, close to the Belgian border. On a map, its most recognisable features are the docks. Large rectangular basins and locks spread west from the town, and the port continues along the coast for many kilometres. Canals cross the flat land behind the town in straight lines.

The town centre is compact. Its streets are fairly regular because much of it was rebuilt after the Second World War. The belfry and the town hall mark the centre. To the east, Malo-les-Bains has a gridded seaside district that faces a wide, straight beach and a long promenade.

In 1940, Dunkirk was the site of Operation Dynamo, when more than 300,000 Allied soldiers were evacuated from its harbour and beaches. The town is also known for its lively winter carnival. A Dunkirk map poster shows the docks, canals and shoreline in precise black lines.

Dock basins

The port's long rectangular basins and locks create a strong geometric pattern, unlike anything else on the coast.

02

Malo-les-Bains beach

A wide, straight beach runs east from the town. It forms a clean edge between the seaside grid and the North Sea.

03

Canals of the plain

Straight waterways cross the low Flemish land behind the town and give the map long, steady lines.

He mapa ʻe maʻuhiga

Dunkirk carries weight for many families whose history includes 1940, and it is also home to people with no connection to the war. The poster shows the town as it is today: docks, streets and sea.
