Durg lies on the plains of central Chhattisgarh, with the Shivnath River running along its western side. On a map, the city is one half of a twin urban area. It merges eastward into Bhilai, and the two are joined by a major highway and railway corridor that runs through both. Together they form one of the largest urban centres in the state.
The older town of Durg has the denser, more organic street pattern of an established market and administrative centre. Next door, Bhilai was built around its large steel plant with planned township sectors. That makes the joined map an interesting study in contrasts, with growth by accretion on one side and deliberate planning on the other.
