Te mapa
El Jem stands on the flat, olive-growing plain of Tunisia's Sahel, roughly midway between Sousse and Sfax. The town is small and low, but at its centre stands one of the largest Roman amphitheatres ever built. It dates from the third century, and UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage site in 1979. From above, the arena's oval is unmistakable, set among ordinary streets like a monument dropped into a village.
In antiquity the town was Thysdrus, a prosperous centre of the olive oil trade, and the amphitheatre is the most visible trace of that wealth. The modern streets wrap loosely around it, with the main road and the railway passing nearby. Beyond the last houses the map changes to the regular rows of olive plantations that still drive the region's economy.
An El Jem map poster makes an unusual graphic piece because it has a clear centre of gravity. The eye goes first to the ellipse of the arena, then to the surrounding blocks, then to the straight roads leaving town. In monochrome, the contrast between ancient geometry and everyday streets becomes the whole subject, with no labels needed.
The great oval of the Roman arena sits in the middle of town. It is the most recognisable shape on the map, a closed ring among irregular modern blocks.
Streets curve and bend where they meet the monument, so the plan of the centre still records the ancient building almost eighteen centuries after it was built.
Outside the town, the land is covered in orderly olive groves. Their rows and tracks create a soft, repeating texture toward the edges of the print.

Koteā ko El Jem
Visitors who have stood inside the arena often want something more lasting than a photo. A map shows the monument in its real setting, an ordinary Tunisian town that grew up around it. The strong central oval also makes El Jem an elegant, almost abstract poster for any wall.
Change the title, add a subtitle with the date of your trip, and keep or edit the coordinates line. The five styles are Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand, and each suits a different room. Sand works especially well for this warm, dry landscape.
