Enfield lies in northern Connecticut on the border with Massachusetts, with the Connecticut River forming its western edge. The town's map is shaped by that river and by Interstate 91, which runs north to south through the middle, separating older riverfront areas from the suburban streets that spread east.
Thompsonville, the historic village by the river, grew around large carpet mills in the nineteenth century, and its tighter grid still stands out on the map. Enfield also holds a notable place in American religious history: in 1741 Jonathan Edwards delivered his famous sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God here, and the town was later home to a Shaker community.
