Te mapa
Escalante lies on the northern coast of Negros Island in the province of Negros Occidental. From above, the city is mostly countryside: a large area of fields and scattered barangays, with the urban centre forming a small, compact grid near the coast. The coastal highway runs through it, connecting the city with the rest of northern Negros.
Like much of Negros Occidental, the area is closely tied to sugarcane, and the long farm roads crossing the countryside reflect that agricultural economy. To the north the coast faces open water toward the Visayan Sea, with fishing communities strung along a low, uneven shoreline broken by small inlets.
An Escalante map poster shows the scale of a provincial Philippine city, where the town proper is only a small part of the whole. The coastline gives the composition its edge, and the network of roads fanning inland describes how people and crops move between the fields and the sea.
The compact centre near the coast has a regular, closely spaced grid of streets, the densest area on the map and the natural focus of the print.
The main road along the northern coast of Negros passes through the city, a continuous line tying Escalante to its neighbours along the shore.
A low coastline with small inlets and fishing settlements forms the northern edge, giving the map an irregular boundary against open water.

Koteā ko Escalante
Many families from Negros live elsewhere in the Philippines or overseas, and a map of Escalante is a quiet way to keep a home town close. It also suits anyone with ties to the island's sugar country and its coast.
