Fazhanhe is a township in the far south of Yunnan, in the subtropical uplands of Xishuangbanna near China's borders with Myanmar and Laos. This is mountain country cut by rivers. On a map, the built-up area is modest and follows the terrain, with roads that bend around hills and settlements set on the flatter ground.
Southern Yunnan is one of the most ethnically diverse parts of China, and the region's economy has long relied on tea, rubber and other upland crops. The land around Fazhanhe reflects this. Farmland and plantations surround the settlement, and villages are scattered along the valleys between forested slopes.
