Te mapa
Flint stands on the Welsh shore of the Dee estuary, facing the Wirral across wide tidal sands. It was founded by Edward I in 1277 along with its castle, the first of his fortresses in Wales. The town was laid out as a planned settlement, and traces of that original rectilinear street pattern can still be read in the centre today.
The castle is right at the water's edge, a small, compact shape where the town meets the estuary. The North Wales coast railway runs parallel to the shore and separates the streets from the marsh and mudflats. From above, Flint appears as an orderly core, a strong line of track and then a wide, open expanse of estuary.
Flint Castle also has a literary role. It is where Richard II surrendered to Henry Bolingbroke in 1399, a scene Shakespeare set there in Richard II. A Flint map poster suits people who know the town's walks along the Dee, and anyone interested in how a thirteenth-century plan still shows through in a modern street map.
Built from 1277 on the estuary shore, the castle forms a small, distinct shape at the town's edge, where the street pattern ends and the tidal ground begins.
The centre still carries the outlines of Edward I's planned town. It shows as a noticeably regular pattern of streets compared with the later housing around it.
Broad sands and channels fill one side of the poster. They give the composition a large area of open space, crossed only by the lines of the shoreline.
