Te mapa
The French Quarter, or Vieux Carré, is the oldest part of New Orleans and one of the clearest shapes on the map of the city. Its streets form a near-regular grid laid out in the early eighteenth century, set along a curve of the Mississippi River and bounded by Canal Street, Rampart Street and Esplanade Avenue.
Jackson Square sits at the centre of the riverfront, with St. Louis Cathedral facing it. Bourbon Street and Royal Street run parallel to the river through the grid. Despite the name, much of the district's architecture dates from the Spanish period, built after fires in 1788 and 1794 destroyed many earlier buildings.
A French Quarter map poster shows a compact, symmetrical plan against the sweep of the river. The grid is tilted to follow the Mississippi, the square opens at the water's edge, and the wide avenues along the boundaries frame the whole quarter clearly.
The central square faces the river, with St. Louis Cathedral on its inland side. On the poster it is the main open space within the regular grid.
The river curves along the southern edge of the quarter, and the whole grid is angled to follow it, giving the map its distinctive tilt.
Canal Street, Rampart Street and Esplanade Avenue enclose the quarter on its other sides, forming a clear frame around its compact streets.
