Te mapa
Fukuechō is the main town of Fukue Island, the largest of the Gotō Islands off the west coast of Kyushu in Nagasaki Prefecture. The town sits around a harbour on the island's eastern side, where ferries and jetfoils connect to Nagasaki. On the map, piers and breakwaters shape the waterfront, and a dense network of narrow streets fills the level ground behind it.
Close to the harbour stands Fukue Castle, also called Ishida Castle. It was completed in 1863, making it one of the last castles built in Japan before the end of the Edo period, and it originally faced the sea. Beyond the town, low volcanic hills and fields spread across the island, and the Gotō Islands are widely known for churches tied to the history of Japan's hidden Christians.
A Fukuechō map poster suits islanders, former residents who have moved to the mainland, and travellers who have explored the Gotō coast. The irregular shoreline, the castle grounds near the port and the contrast between the dense town and the open island give the design a strong sense of place.
Piers, breakwaters and ferry terminals give the waterfront a precise, angular edge. This is the busiest part of the map and the island's gateway to Nagasaki.
Fukue Castle's walls and moat sit close to the port, a compact geometric shape among the surrounding streets and one of the last castles of the Edo period.
Behind the town the ground rises into gentle volcanic hills and farmland, so the streets thin out quickly and leave the upper part of the map open.
