Te mapa
Garissa stands on the Tana, Kenya's longest river, in the country's north-east. From above the river is the main feature: a winding green line through an otherwise dry, open landscape. The town's streets spread back from the water in a loose grid, then thin into scattered buildings and tracks as the land turns to semi-arid scrub.
The town is the capital of Garissa County and a trading centre for the pastoral communities of the region, and livestock markets have long been central to its economy. The bridge over the Tana carries the main road from Nairobi into the north-east, which makes Garissa an important crossing point. Irrigated farms along the banks contrast sharply with the dry country around them.
A Garissa map poster draws that contrast clearly. The river bends through the frame with its narrow strip of farms, the town gathers beside it in a compact pattern of streets, and long roads lead away across nearly empty land. The composition is spare and open, a fair reflection of the scale of the landscape around the town.

The bridge carrying the main road over the Tana is a key point on the map, where the route from Nairobi enters the north-east.
Beyond the town, the streets fade into a sparse landscape crossed by a few long roads, leaving wide open space around the settlement.
