Te mapa
Garmisch-Partenkirchen lies in a wide valley in southern Bavaria, close to the Austrian border. It was formed in 1935, when the two market towns of Garmisch and Partenkirchen were joined ahead of the 1936 Winter Olympics. On a map the two old centres can still be seen: Garmisch to the west and Partenkirchen to the east, with newer streets filling the space between.
The Loisach flows through the valley, and the Partnach joins it after coming out of the mountains through the narrow Partnach Gorge. Around the valley the mountains rise sharply, and the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, stands to the southwest. At the edges of the map, the streets end suddenly where the slopes begin.
The Olympic ski stadium and its jump sit at the foot of the Gudiberg and host the New Year's event of the Four Hills Tournament each year. A Garmisch-Partenkirchen map poster shows a town held in place by mountains, with rivers threading through and every street ending at a slope.
The historic cores of Garmisch and Partenkirchen remain distinct, each with its own cluster of streets, joined by later neighbourhoods across the valley floor.
The Loisach runs through the valley and the Partnach enters from the mountains, their lines connecting the town with the Alpine gorges to the south.
The Olympic ski stadium and jump sit at the base of the slopes on the town's southern side, a clear landmark where town meets mountain.

For skiers, hikers and anyone who has seen the New Year's jump, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a place of strong memories. The valley shape surrounded by empty mountain space makes a striking poster.
