Gjilan lies in south-eastern Kosovo, in the Anamorava region, a landscape of low hills, fertile valleys and small villages. The town is the regional centre, and its map reflects that role: a busy core with a concentration of streets, surrounded by residential neighbourhoods that climb gently into the surrounding slopes.
The street pattern is irregular, shaped by terrain and by growth over different periods rather than by one plan.
