Te mapa
Gothenburg was founded in 1621 by King Gustav II Adolf at the mouth of the Göta älv, on Sweden's west coast. Dutch engineers, experienced with wet ground, were brought in to plan the new town, and they gave it a network of canals and a fortified moat. Parts of that moat, the Vallgraven, still trace a zigzag line around the inner city today.
From above, the river divides the city into two unequal halves: the historic centre and its canal grid on the south bank, and the former shipyard districts of Hisingen to the north. Westward the river widens toward the Kattegat, where the Älvsborg Bridge crosses high above the shipping lane and the coastline breaks up into an archipelago of low granite islands.
The port here is the largest in the Nordic countries, and the city is also known as the home of Volvo. A Gothenburg map poster shows how much of the place is shaped by water: the angular outline of the old moat, straight canals cutting through the centre, and the long bends of the river running out past the harbour into scattered islands.
The remaining section of the seventeenth-century defensive moat still follows its angular bastion outline around the inner city, one of the most recognisable shapes on any Gothenburg map.
The river splits the city between the old centre and Hisingen, broadening as it heads west through the harbour and under the Älvsborg Bridge toward open water.
Off the coast the land fragments into dozens of small islands and skerries, giving the western edge of the map a scattered, textured finish.

Koteā ko Gothenburg
Gothenburg suits a map poster because its geometry is so legible: the star-shaped moat, the canals and the river make the city recognisable at a glance. It is a good reminder of student years, a first flat in Haga or a summer spent out on the islands.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can all be personalised, and there are five styles to pick from: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Printed posters ship from partners in more than 30 countries, or you can print the 300 DPI files yourself.
