Te mapa
Læsø lies in the Kattegat between Jutland and Sweden and is reached by ferry from Frederikshavn. It is low and flat, made of sand and gravel that rose from the sea over thousands of years, and its coasts shift gently with the tides and currents. On a map it is a wide, irregular island with its harbours on the northern side and broad tidal ground along the south.
The main villages are Byrum, inland, and the harbour towns of Vesterø Havn and Østerby. A simple road network links them across heath, woodland and farmland. The southern coast opens into Rønnerne, a landscape of salt meadows, lagoons and small islets. On a map it breaks the shoreline into a fine, broken edge.
Læsø is known for two old traditions. Salt is produced from the brackish groundwater of its southern meadows, and some houses are roofed with thick layers of seaweed, a building style found almost nowhere else. A Læsø map poster keeps the island’s quiet structure in view: a flat shape with a few roads and villages set in open, shallow sea.
The south of the island breaks into salt meadows, lagoons and low islets. They turn the coastline into a delicate, fragmented edge that stands out in the drawing.
Vesterø Havn and Østerby sit on the northern coast. Each is a small cluster of streets around a harbour and one of the densest points on an otherwise open island.
A handful of roads cross the island between the harbours and Byrum. They run over flat land in long, open lines that give the map its calm structure.
