Jönköping sits at the southern end of Vättern, Sweden's second-largest lake, and its map is dominated by water. The city centre occupies a narrow strip of land between Vättern to the north and the smaller lakes Munksjön and Rocksjön to the south. From above, it is one of the most distinctive city outlines in Sweden.
Steep, wooded slopes rise on the east and west sides, and the city has spread up the hills in curving residential streets. Along the lakeshore, eastward toward Huskvarna, it forms a long urban ribbon beside the water. The old centre's straight streets contrast with the curved lines of the hillside districts.
