Te mapa
Grand Forks lies on the Red River of the North, facing East Grand Forks, Minnesota across the water. The city takes its name from the point where the Red Lake River joins the Red from the east. The flat Red River Valley allows a very regular street grid, which runs to the horizon, broken only by the winding river.
In 1997 a severe flood overtopped the dikes and inundated much of the city. After the flood, the neighbourhoods closest to the river were cleared and replaced by a long greenway with new levees. On the map this shows as a broad green band between the river and the grid, one of the clearest traces of recent history on any American city plan.
The University of North Dakota occupies a large campus on the west side, with the English Coulee winding through it. A Grand Forks map poster shows all of this: the forks of the river, the long greenway, the campus and the rigid prairie grid heading out toward the farms.
The Red Lake River joins the Red River of the North opposite downtown. This is the confluence that gave Grand Forks and East Grand Forks their names.
After the 1997 flood, riverside neighbourhoods became parkland protected by levees, which now form a continuous green ribbon along the water.
The University of North Dakota spreads across the west side of the city, its buildings and fields crossed by the curving English Coulee.

Koteā ko Grand Forks
Grand Forks means a great deal to UND alumni, to families who rebuilt after 1997 and to anyone who has lived through a Red River winter. The strong grid and meandering river make a striking print.
Put your graduation year, a family name or a moving date in the title and subtitle, and fine-tune the coordinates. Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand each give it a different feel.
