Te mapa
Grand Island sits in central Nebraska, on the north side of the Platte River, and takes its name from a large island in that river. From above, the city is a classic Great Plains grid laid out across flat land, with the braided channels of the Platte running along its southern edge and wide farm fields spreading beyond.
Settled by German immigrants in the 1850s, the city grew with the arrival of the Union Pacific railroad, and the tracks still cross its centre. The rail line breaks the grid on a diagonal, and the historic downtown sits close to it. The city is also home to the Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer, which interprets that frontier history.
In spring, the Platte Valley nearby hosts one of the largest gatherings of sandhill cranes in the world, drawing visitors from far away. A Grand Island map poster shows the grid, the railroad and the braided course of the Platte, the key lines of a prairie city.
The river runs south of the city in a series of braided channels and sandbars, a looser, natural pattern beside the straight streets.
The Union Pacific line crosses the city near its historic centre, an angled line that marks the route that shaped the town's growth.
Streets follow a regular pattern across flat land, extending outward into square fields and rural roads that continue to the horizon.

Grand Island is a fine choice for Nebraskans, for families with roots in the Platte Valley and for anyone who has travelled there to see the cranes. The grid and river together make a balanced, calm print.
