Guapimirim is in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where the lowlands at the head of Guanabara Bay meet the steep slopes of the Serra dos Órgãos. The municipality extends from the mangrove swamps near the bay to the forested mountains, and several rivers descend from the hills across the plain toward the water.
The mangroves on this part of the bay are protected by an environmental reserve, the APA de Guapimirim. In the mountains, part of the Serra dos Órgãos National Park is known for its granite peaks, including the Dedo de Deus. The BR-116 road passes through the area and climbs the mountains toward Teresópolis.
