Te mapa
Gubkin lies in Belgorod Oblast in southern Russia, in the heart of the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly, one of the richest iron ore deposits on earth. The town was built in the mid twentieth century to serve the mines. It is named after the geologist Ivan Gubkin, who led early studies of the anomaly. Its plan reflects that origin: orderly and practical.
Beside the town lies the Lebedinsky mining and processing plant, whose open pit is among the largest in the world. On a map the quarry is an enormous stepped hollow, bigger than whole residential districts and surrounded by spoil heaps and tailings ponds. The Oskolets river valley and the rolling farmland of the Black Earth region fill the rest of the frame.
A Gubkin map poster shows an unusual meeting of industry and town planning. The residential grid, with its straight avenues and rows of apartment blocks, sits next to the terraced geometry of the pit. Together they form a composition that is both technical and striking. For anyone connected to the mines, it is a very personal map.

Gubkin's central streets follow a regular Soviet-era layout. Straight avenues and long blocks give the town a clear, ordered structure that is easy to read from above.
The small Oskolets river runs through the area. Its valley and ponds add soft, natural lines between the planned streets and the industrial landscape.

Koteā ko Gubkin
Many families in Gubkin are tied to mining, and a map of the town recognises that history without turning it into a souvenir. It makes a good gift for a retiring engineer, for someone who grew up there or for anyone drawn to the stark beauty of industrial landscapes.
