Guelmim lies in southern Morocco, on a broad plain between the last ridges of the Anti-Atlas and the pre-Saharan lowlands. It is the capital of the Guelmim-Oued Noun region and has long been called the gateway to the Sahara. It is a meeting point between the settled north and the desert routes leading south.
From above, the town is a compact mass of low buildings and streets. The newer districts follow a regular grid, while the older quarters are denser and more irregular. Main roads lead out toward Tan-Tan, Sidi Ifni and Tiznit, and palm groves and irrigated gardens mark the edges wherever there is water.

Desert roads
Highways leave the town toward the coast and the south. They draw long straight lines across the open plain and connect Guelmim to the wider region.
