Te mapa
Guelph grew around the confluence of the Speed and Eramosa rivers in southern Ontario. From above, its centre is unusual for a North American city. Instead of a strict grid, the streets fan out from the river in a radial pattern, and the older neighbourhoods fill the wedges between them. Parks and trails run along both riverbanks.
The town was founded in 1827 by John Galt of the Canada Company, who deliberately gave it a European-style plan. It is called the Royal City after the Hanoverian royal family, whose ancestral name was Guelph. The Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate stands on a hill above downtown, and the University of Guelph began as an agricultural college.
A Guelph map poster shows the fan-shaped plan clearly. The two rivers meet near the centre, the downtown streets spread outwards like the ribs of an umbrella, and the university’s open grounds lie to the south. Further out, newer suburbs follow more conventional layouts, and the green corridors of the rivers run through all of it.

The Speed and Eramosa rivers meet near the centre, and their banks are lined with parks and trails that form green ribbons through the city.
The University of Guelph campus lies south of downtown. Its open spaces and fields contrast with the dense streets of the older town.
