Milton lies west of Toronto in Halton Region, where the Niagara Escarpment rises sharply from the plain. On a map the old town centre forms a small, regular grid around Main Street, and newer neighbourhoods spread outward in long curving streets. Highway 401 crosses the town, and railway lines add more straight strokes to the pattern.
For many years Milton was one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Canada, and the map shows the contrast between compact older blocks and large recent subdivisions. To the west the escarpment brings conservation areas, quarries and wooded cliffs, including Rattlesnake Point and Kelso. There the street network gives way to trails and reservoir shorelines.
The town is also home to the Mattamy National Cycling Centre, the indoor velodrome built for the 2015 Pan American Games.
