From above, Guerara shows the classic form of a Saharan fortified town. The old ksar is a compact knot of narrow lanes on raised ground, and the newer districts spread out around it in more regular blocks. Next to the town, the palm grove appears as a large green patch, divided by paths and irrigation channels, against the open desert beyond.
Guerara is in the Ghardaïa province of Algeria, in the northern Sahara, and is one of the Mozabite towns associated with the M'zab region. Like its neighbours, it was built around a mosque on a hilltop, with houses stepping down the slopes. The palm grove has long been the source of the town's water and food.
