Te mapa
Guimarães lies in the Minho region of northern Portugal, in a valley surrounded by green hills. On a map, the historic centre stands out as a dense, irregular tangle of lanes stretching roughly from the castle and the Ducal Palace in the north down to the squares of the old town. Newer avenues and residential districts spread out around it.
To the south-east, the Penha hill rises steeply, covered with woods and reached by a cable car from the town. Its slopes form a large open area next to the streets. The historic core is small enough to walk across in minutes, yet it contains an unusually complete medieval street network. A Guimarães map poster captures that concentrated core very clearly.
Guimarães is often called the birthplace of Portugal because it is associated with Afonso Henriques, the first king, and the early years of the kingdom. The words Aqui nasceu Portugal are written on an old section of the town wall. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in 2012 the city was a European Capital of Culture.

Narrow, irregular streets and small squares form a dense, finely detailed core that stands out clearly from the newer districts around it.
The wooded hill south-east of town creates a large green space on the map. A cable car links it with the streets below.

Koteā ko Guimarães
Guimarães is where many Portuguese feel their country began, and it is a favourite for students, visitors and emigrants returning to the Minho. A map of its old centre is a lasting way to remember that place.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, for example with a wedding date or a university year. Then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper suits the medieval streets especially well.
