Te mapa
On a map of Washington, H Street NE reads as one confident line. It leaves the tracks behind Union Station on a long bridge and runs east through the lettered and numbered grid of the Near Northeast, crossed at intervals by the diagonal avenues of the historic city plan. Narrow row-house blocks line both sides in tight, regular strips, so the street stands out as the widest stroke on the page.
At its eastern end, H Street meets Maryland Avenue, Benning Road, Bladensburg Road and 15th Street at a many-armed junction known locally as the Starburst. To the north lies the campus of Gallaudet University, founded for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, and to the south the blocks run on toward Capitol Hill. The DC Streetcar has run down the middle of H Street since 2016, tracing the same line the map draws.
The buildings along the corridor record its past. Heavily damaged during the unrest of 1968, the street took decades to rebuild before it became known as the Atlas District, named after the restored Atlas theatre that is now a performing arts centre. An H Street NE map poster frames the whole stretch, from the rail bridge to the Starburst, as one clean composition in black and white.

Several streets meet at the eastern end of the corridor and draw a star shape that stands out sharply against the square blocks and row-house strips of the Near Northeast.
The DC Streetcar runs along the centre of H Street and on down Benning Road, so the poster's main line is also a transit route linking Union Station with the neighbourhoods further east.

Koteā ko H Street NE
People who have lived on or near H Street tend to know it block by block: a first apartment above a shop, a regular table somewhere, the walk to Union Station. A poster turns that daily route into one quiet graphic line and gives the corridor the attention it has earned.
