Te mapa
Harbel lies in Margibi County, Liberia, inland from the coast and not far from Roberts International Airport. It grew as the headquarters of the Firestone rubber plantation, established in the 1920s. The name combines Harvey and Idabelle, the first names of Harvey Firestone and his wife. On a map, that history shows in almost every line.
Around the town, the plantation covers a very large area, divided into blocks by straight estate roads and tracks running through the rubber trees. Workers' camps, offices and facilities are scattered across this landscape. As a result the map reads less like a conventional town and more like a planned network of settlements inside an agricultural estate.
Rivers, including the Farmington, cross the area and add softer curves to the measured layout. A Harbel map poster captures this unusual pattern, in which a single industry has set the geometry of the land. It will speak most to those who lived, worked or grew up on or near the plantation.
Estate roads divide the rubber plantation into large, regular blocks. The repeating pattern fills much of the poster with straight lines and right angles.
The river winds through the plantation area toward the coast. Its curves break up the regular estate layout and give the map a natural counterpoint.
Roberts International Airport, Liberia's main international gateway, lies close to Harbel. Its runway appears as a long, clean line near the town.

Koteā ko Harbel
Harbel has been home to generations of plantation workers and their families, and many Liberians abroad have a connection to it. A map of the town and estate keeps that place, and the people it stands for, close.
