Te mapa
Hekou is the seat of Hekou Yao Autonomous County in southern Yunnan, built where the Nanxi River flows into the Red River. On a map the town fills a wedge of land between the two rivers, with Vietnam's Lào Cai directly across the water. Steep, forested hills rise right behind the streets and squeeze the town into a narrow strip along the rivers.
Hekou has long been a gateway between China and Vietnam. The metre-gauge Yunnan–Vietnam railway, built by the French in the early twentieth century to link Kunming with Haiphong, crosses the border here. Road and rail bridges tie the two towns together. Today it is one of the main crossings for trade and travel between the two countries.
A Hekou map poster is defined by the meeting of its rivers. The two rivers join in a clear Y-shape, bridges cross to the Vietnamese bank, and the streets pack tightly into the space the hills allow. It is a compact, strongly composed map, with the rivers doing most of the graphic work.
The Nanxi meets the Red River at the edge of town, forming a sharp junction of water that is the most recognisable shape on the map.
Road and rail bridges cross to Lào Cai, drawing short, precise lines over the water between China and Vietnam.
Steep slopes rise close behind the town, so streets run along the riverbanks and up the valleys. The built-up area takes a long, narrow form.

Koteā ko Hekou
Hekou appeals to anyone with ties to the Yunnan borderlands or memories of crossing into Vietnam by train or on foot. A map of its rivers and bridges is a thoughtful, graphic keepsake of that crossing point.
