Te mapa
Hilo wraps around the crescent of Hilo Bay on the eastern side of Hawaii Island. From above, the town follows the shoreline and then spreads uphill onto the long, gentle slopes of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, crossed by rivers and streams running down to the sea.
The Wailuku River flows through the north of town, passing Rainbow Falls on the way. After damaging tsunamis in 1946 and 1960, much of the low waterfront was turned into parks and open land, which is why the bayfront appears strikingly open on the map. Banyan Drive and Liliʻuokalani Gardens occupy the peninsula to the east.
A Hilo map poster shows a sweeping coastline, a compact historic downtown, and streets gradually loosening as they climb inland. The combination of water, open space and volcanic slopes gives it a character unlike any other Hawaiian town.
The bay forms a wide curved coastline with a breakwater offshore, framing the town and giving the map its dominant line.
Parks and open land along the shore mark areas left clear after the tsunamis of 1946 and 1960, separating downtown from the water.
The Wailuku River and other streams run down from the volcanic slopes, cutting across the town on their way to the bay.

Koteā ko Hilo
Hilo is a place of rain, gardens and slow mornings by the bay, and many people carry it with them after they leave. A map of the town keeps the curve of the coast in view wherever they live.
Personalise the title, add a subtitle with a date or name, and set the coordinates line. The map comes in Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand.
