Te mapa
Hirado is on Hirado Island, just off the north-western coast of Kyushu in Nagasaki Prefecture. A red suspension bridge crosses the narrow strait to the mainland. The main town is built around a small, sheltered harbour. Hirado Castle stands on a headland above the bay, and the streets climb the slopes behind the waterfront.
Hirado was one of Japan's first ports of contact with Europe. Portuguese traders arrived in 1550, and the Dutch East India Company operated a trading post here from 1609 until it was moved to Dejima in Nagasaki in 1641. A reconstructed stone warehouse from the Dutch post now stands on the waterfront.
A Hirado map poster shows a coastline full of detail: coves, headlands, the strait and the bridge. The town is small and follows the shape of the harbour, and the hilly interior of the island rises behind it.
The suspension bridge crosses the strait between the island and Kyushu. It is a thin line on the map, but it clearly links two coastlines.
Hirado Castle stands on a point of land above the bay. It overlooks the harbour and the old trading waterfront opposite.
The site of the seventeenth-century Dutch post lies along the harbour's edge. The reconstructed warehouse there recalls Hirado's early role in trade with Europe.

Koteā ko Hirado
Hirado appeals to people interested in Japan's early contact with the outside world, and to anyone who has crossed the bridge to the island. Its coast is detailed enough to look good even at the smallest print size.
You can personalise the title and subtitle, including in Japanese, and edit the coordinates line. Blueprint suits the harbour and strait well. Classic black & white, Noir, Paper and Sand are also available.
