Huanan is the seat of Huanan County, part of Jiamusi in the northeast Chinese province of Heilongjiang. The town lies at the southern edge of the wide lowlands of the Sanjiang Plain, where the land is flat and farmed on a large scale, with higher, wooded ground further south. From above, it is a compact block of streets set in a sea of rectangular fields.
Like many towns in northeast China, Huanan has a largely regular street plan, with long straight roads and broad blocks. Winters here are long and cold, and the growing season is short but productive, with grain and soybeans among the region's main crops. The rural roads leaving town follow the field boundaries, extending the grid far into the countryside.
