Te mapa
Jixi lies in the southeast of Heilongjiang, not far from the border with Russia. From above, the city follows the valley of the Muling River, which runs across the urban area. The main districts form a long band on the valley floor, with hills rising to the north and south and mining towns scattered through the surroundings.
Jixi grew as one of the main coal-mining centres of northeast China, and mining still shapes its districts and economy. The area is also known for its graphite deposits. To the southeast lies Lake Khanka, a large shallow lake shared with Russia and an important stop for migrating birds. The territory around the city reaches from the mining valleys to the lake shore through forests, fields and wetlands.
A Jixi map poster shows a city shaped by terrain and industry. The river sets the direction of the plan, and the main streets run parallel to it. Outlying districts sit along the roads and rail lines that lead to the mines. The result is a long, jointed composition that suits a minimal black-and-white print.
The river runs the length of the city, and the main streets follow its course. It gives the whole plan a clear east–west orientation.
Hills on either side keep the city on the valley floor. The result is a long band of dense streets instead of a compact city centre.
Outlying districts connected by roads and rail lines mark the mining areas that built the city. They are spread across the surrounding landscape.
