Hailin lies in south-eastern Heilongjiang, in a region of low mountains and forest west of Mudanjiang. The city occupies a river valley, and from above its layout follows the flat ground: a denser centre along the water and the rail corridor, with residential blocks thinning out towards the wooded slopes that close off the view on either side.
The county-level city is known across China for its snowy winters. Its administrative area includes Snow Town, a mountain village that attracts winter visitors for its deep, rounded snowdrifts on rooftops. The surrounding forests and the region’s history also feature in well-known Chinese stories of the northeast.
