Te mapa
Suifenhe is a border city in southeastern Heilongjiang, a short distance from the Russian frontier and the Primorye region beyond. Its streets are laid out across hilly ground, so the map shows a compact core of blocks surrounded by slopes. From there, roads curve outward toward the border crossings and the countryside.
The town owes its existence to the railway. It grew up in the early twentieth century as a station on the Chinese Eastern Railway, which linked Harbin with Vladivostok and the Trans-Siberian line, and the tracks still run through the city as a clear curving line. Today Suifenhe is one of the main land ports for trade between China and Russia.
A Suifenhe map poster shows a small place defined by movement: rail and road converging on a crossing point, and a town packed into the low ground between hills. For people who have traded, travelled or grown up here, it is a way to hold on to a place whose purpose has always been connection.
The historic line enters from the west and continues toward the Russian border, curving through the town and giving the map its most distinctive long stroke.
The central blocks are closely packed on the lower ground, forming a dense, irregular grid that stands out clearly against the open hills around it.
Beyond the last streets the map quickly empties into wooded hills and farmland, with only a few roads heading east toward the crossings into Russia.

Koteā ko Suifenhe
Border towns carry a particular kind of memory: arrivals, departures and years spent between two languages. A map of Suifenhe captures that position quietly, showing the tracks and roads that tie it to both sides of the frontier.
