Te mapa
Ussuriysk lies north of Vladivostok on a broad valley plain in southern Primorye. The Razdolnaya River loops across the land to the west and south, and smaller tributaries run through the city itself. Between them sits a fairly regular grid of streets, with residential blocks spreading out towards the farmland beyond.
The city grew as a railway junction. The Trans-Siberian Railway passes through, and a branch heads west towards the Chinese border, which is only a short distance away. The town has had several names, including Nikolskoye and Voroshilov, before it became Ussuriysk in 1957.
The area has much older history as well. Remains from the medieval Bohai and Jurchen periods have been found here, including a well-known stone tortoise monument. An Ussuriysk map poster shows the river loops, rail lines and orderly blocks of a Far Eastern crossroads town.
The river meanders across the plain around the city and draws broad curves that frame the straight streets.
The Trans-Siberian main line and the branch towards China meet here, and their tracks cut long diagonals through the urban grid.
The city centre follows an even street grid that gives way to larger residential blocks and then open farmland.
