Te mapa
Dunhua lies in the east of Jilin province, in the Yanbian region near the upper reaches of the Mudan River, which rises in the surrounding mountains and flows north toward Heilongjiang. From above, the city is a compact grid of broad avenues and large blocks on the valley floor, bounded by the river and hemmed in by low, forested hills on several sides.
The area has a long history as a meeting ground of plains and mountains. In the late seventh century it became the first seat of the Balhae kingdom, and on Liuding Mountain, south of the city, archaeologists excavated royal tombs, including that of Princess Jeonghye. The same mountain is now home to a Buddhist temple complex and a large statue of the Buddha.
A Dunhua map poster shows a planned city grid bending to meet a mountain river, with wooded slopes pressing close to its edges. The clean geometry of the avenues contrasts with the looser lines of the valley, making for a strong, well-balanced design in any of the five styles.
The Mudan River curves past the city centre, its banks lined with parkland, forming the main natural line against which the orderly street grid is set.
The central districts follow a regular pattern of wide avenues and large rectangular blocks, typical of cities in northeastern China and very legible on a poster.
South of the city, Liuding Mountain holds Balhae-era royal tombs and a Buddhist temple complex, with roads winding up into the trees from the edge of town.

Dunhua is a meaningful place for people with roots in Yanbian and for anyone interested in the early history of the region. A map of its streets sets that history and today's city side by side.
