Jiaohe is a county-level city in Jilin Province, east of Jilin City, in a basin among the wooded uplands that rise toward the Changbai range. From above, the built-up area forms a compact patch on flat valley land. A river winds past and ridges press in from several sides.
The street network is simple, mostly a grid of main roads and residential blocks, and the railway runs through the town on its way across the province. At the edges, fields and scattered villages quickly give way to forest. A Jiaohe map poster therefore shows a clear, readable core surrounded by the looser lines of rural roads and streams.
The surrounding hills are the town's best-known feature.
