Huanren sits in the forested mountains of eastern Liaoning, in a valley along the Hun River. On a map the town is a compact cluster of streets on the valley floor. Steep, wooded slopes rise all around, and a long, winding reservoir fills the neighbouring valleys and gives the landscape its main shape.
Huanren is a Manchu autonomous county, and the surrounding land is closely tied to early Korean history. The flat-topped Wunü Mountain nearby is believed to be the site of the first capital of the Goguryeo kingdom, and it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
