Te mapa
Tonghua lies in the mountains of south-eastern Jilin province, not far from the border with North Korea. There was no room here for a broad grid, so the city stretches along the Hunjiang River, filling the valley floor and reaching a little into side valleys. From above, the built-up area looks like a ribbon of streets squeezed between the water and the surrounding slopes.
The river bends through the centre, crossed by a series of bridges that stitch the two banks together. Roads and rail lines follow the valley too, running parallel to the water before threading out through narrow gaps in the hills. Around the edges, the winding lines of mountain roads and farm tracks hint at how steep the terrain becomes just beyond town.
Tonghua has a long history of making wine from the wild grapes that grow in the surrounding hills, and the city is often used as a gateway toward the Changbai Mountains further east. A Tonghua map poster captures a place defined by its landscape: one river, one narrow valley and a line of bridges holding the two halves together.
The river winds through the heart of the city, setting the direction of almost every major street. On the print it forms a strong, curving spine from one edge to the other.
A sequence of bridges crosses the Hunjiang between the two banks. They appear as short, even strokes that give rhythm to the long river line.
Steep ridges close in on both sides of the valley, so the city ends abruptly where the slopes begin. That sudden edge gives the poster a clear, sculpted outline.
