Te mapa
Huaura lies on the northern coast of the Lima region, beside the river of the same name and just north of Huacho. From above, the contrast is striking: a green valley of irrigated fields following the river, bordered by bare desert terrain. The town sits at the edge of this fertile strip, with a compact centre and the Pan-American Highway passing nearby.
Huaura holds an important place in Peruvian history. In November 1820, José de San Martín proclaimed the independence of Peru from a balcony in the town, now preserved as the Balcón de Huaura. The historic centre, with its plaza and colonial-era blocks, remains the clearest grid on the map.
A Huaura map poster brings together a river, a historic core and the dry coastal landscape. The small regular grid, the winding river and the scattered field patterns of the valley create a varied yet orderly composition, one that reads especially well in the Sand style.
The river runs past the town toward the Pacific, bringing water to a long band of cultivated fields in an otherwise arid coastal region.
The main square and its surrounding blocks form a neat colonial grid, the setting of the balcony where San Martín proclaimed independence in 1820.
The coastal highway passes close to Huaura, a straight line connecting the town with Huacho to the south and with the northern coast.
