Te mapa
Ikere-Ekiti lies in the south of Ekiti State in southwestern Nigeria, a short distance from the state capital, Ado-Ekiti. The landscape around it is hilly and wooded, broken by bare granite outcrops. From above, the town appears as a dense spread of compounds and winding roads. They fit between these rises rather than following a regular plan.
The best known of the hills is Olosunta, a large rock formation closely tied to the town's identity. It is celebrated each year in the Olosunta festival. Ikere is also home to a long-established college of education, now a university, whose campus sits on the edge of the town.
An Ikere-Ekiti map poster shows how a traditional Yoruba town grows around its palace, markets and hills. Roads curve with the terrain, older quarters are dense, and newer housing runs along the routes out of town. In monochrome, the mix of street texture and blank rock surfaces produces an unusually graphic image.
Granite hills rise at the edge of the town. On the map they appear as open shapes without streets, in sharp contrast with the built-up quarters around them.
Instead of a grid, the main roads bend to follow the uneven ground. They link the older central quarters with the newer neighbourhoods further out.
A main road leads north toward the state capital. Development follows it in a long line and draws the town toward its larger neighbour.
