Te mapa
Ilha Grande lies in the bay of Angra dos Reis, off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state. It is large, steep and almost entirely covered in Atlantic Forest. From above its outline is extraordinarily indented, with one cove after another cut into the shore, each ending in a small beach or fishing village.
The main village, Vila do Abraão, sits on the sheltered northern side facing the mainland, where ferries arrive. Cars are not allowed on the island, so the map shows only a few short streets in Abraão and a network of hiking trails climbing over the ridges to beaches such as Lopes Mendes on the ocean side.
For much of the twentieth century the island held a notorious prison, demolished in 1994, which helped preserve the forest by keeping development away. An Ilha Grande map poster shows that dense green mass as a mountainous interior surrounded by a coastline of endless small bays.
The main village and ferry landing on the northern shore. Its handful of streets around the bay are the densest part of the map and the start of most hiking trails.
The shore curves into dozens of coves and peninsulas. On the poster the outline looks almost fractal, each bay drawn as a separate inlet around the island.
With no cars on the island, trails are the main routes between beaches and villages. They run over steep ridges, drawn as thin lines through an otherwise empty interior.

Koteā ko Ilha Grande
Ilha Grande is a favourite escape for people from Rio and São Paulo and a memorable stop for travellers along the Costa Verde. A map of it keeps the coves, trails and beaches in one frame, calm enough for a living room.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for instance with the name of the beach where you stayed. Styles include Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint emphasises the intricate coast.
