Isil’kul’ Map Poster & Print

Isil’kul’ is in the far west of Omsk Oblast, close to the border with Kazakhstan. The town began as a station on the Trans-Siberian Railway at the end of the nineteenth century, and its map still shows that. The railway runs through as a single straight line, and the streets are laid out in a regular grid beside it.

The land around is almost perfectly flat, so nothing bends the pattern. Wide blocks of one-storey houses with gardens fill most of the town, and the grid simply stops at open fields. Small lakes and the birch groves typical of the West Siberian steppe dot the surrounding country.

For much of its history Isil’kul’ has served as a grain and rail town, a stop on the main line between the Urals and Omsk. An Isil’kul’ map poster shows this in the plainest way: a straight track, a straight grid, and wide space on every side.

01

Trans-Siberian line

The main railway cuts straight through the town, the axis around which everything else was laid out when the station was founded.

02

Regular grid

Streets run at right angles in long, even blocks, a pattern allowed by the completely flat steppe terrain.

03

Steppe lakes

Small lakes and birch groves around the town appear as scattered soft shapes against the open agricultural land.

Isil’kul’ means something to people who grew up in the Omsk region, and to anyone who has crossed Siberia by train and remembers the stations along the line. The grid makes a clean, graphic poster.

Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, and pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the railway-town geometry especially well.
