The surrounding land is a series of low, rolling hills, much of it cleared for pasture over the past century. The municipality shares its name with the Itanhém river, which drains this part of southern Bahia toward the Atlantic. Cattle ranching has long been central to the local economy, and the town serves as a supply and market centre for the surrounding farms.
