Te mapa
Iwanuma lies on the flat coastal plain of Miyagi Prefecture, south of Sendai. The Abukuma River reaches the sea at its southern edge. On a map the city stretches from the coast inland: a straight shoreline, then a band of rice fields, then the town centre, the railway and the main road towards Sendai.
Part of Sendai Airport is inside the city's boundary, and its runway is one of the clearest straight lines on the map. The older centre grew around Takekoma Inari Shrine, regarded as one of the three great Inari shrines of Japan. Its grounds are a quiet green space among the narrow streets near the station.
The coast was badly hit by the tsunami of 2011. Since then the city has built a chain of planted mounds along the shore as a memorial and a protective buffer. An Iwanuma map poster shows all of this together: the calm geometry of fields and runway, the older streets, and the rebuilt coastline facing the Pacific.
Sendai Airport straddles the city boundary. Its long runway cuts a straight, bold line across the coastal plain towards the sea.
The grounds of one of Japan's most important Inari shrines form a small green area near the old centre, surrounded by the town's closely packed streets.
The straight Pacific shore is lined with memorial mounds and planted forest built after 2011, a quiet line of recovery along the eastern edge.
