Te mapa
Iwŏn-ŭp is the main town of Iwŏn County in South Hamgyong Province, on the east coast of North Korea. From above, it lies on a narrow coastal plain between hills and the sea, with streets and fields laid out on flat land close to the shore. The coastline gives the map a clear, strong edge.
The east coast of the Korean peninsula is characterised by mountains that come close to the sea, leaving only small strips of lowland for towns and farming. Iwŏn-ŭp follows that pattern, with its roads and rail line running parallel to the coast and connecting it with other towns along the shore.
An Iwŏn-ŭp map poster is a simple, spare composition: the town, the coastal plain, the hills behind and the sea in front. Little is known about the town outside the region, so the map is left to speak for itself, through its shapes rather than its landmarks.
The shore of the East Sea runs along the edge of the map, with open water filling one side of the poster and framing the town sharply.
Flat land between hills and sea holds the town and its fields, a narrow strip that gives the settlement its elongated, shore-following shape.
Roads and the railway follow the shoreline, drawing long parallel lines that connect the town to other settlements along the coast.
