Te mapa
Jales is in the far northwest of São Paulo state, a region opened for settlement in the twentieth century as the agricultural frontier moved inland. Like many towns founded in that period, it was laid out with intention. From above, the centre appears as a disciplined grid of square blocks on gently rolling land.
The town is a regional centre for the surrounding farms, where orchards, pasture and crops form a patchwork of rectangular plots. Roads leave the grid in straight lines toward neighbouring municipalities. At the edges of the built area, newer neighbourhoods extend the original plan outward.
A Jales map poster rewards a close look because of its regularity. The repeated blocks create an even, almost textile-like pattern, broken here and there by squares, avenues and the small streams the plan had to accommodate. In black and white, it is a clear example of the orderly frontier towns of interior Brazil.
The founding plan of square blocks is still the backbone of the centre. It gives the map an even rhythm of streets crossing at right angles.
Squares interrupt the grid at intervals. They show up as small blank rectangles that break the pattern of blocks and mark the civic life of the town.
Straight roads leave town toward the surrounding municipalities of the northwest. They cross the farmland that surrounds the urban area on every side.
