Te mapa
Jamrud sits west of Peshawar at the point where the flat Peshawar valley ends and the road begins its climb into the Khyber Pass. On the map, the town lies along that main road, with the mountains closing in to the west. For centuries it has been the gateway to one of the best-known routes between South and Central Asia.
Two landmarks mark the spot. Jamrud Fort was built by the Sikh Empire in 1836 to guard the approach. The Bab-e-Khyber, a monumental gate over the road, was erected in the 1960s. Both stand on the highway, which forms the backbone of the town on any map.
A Jamrud map poster reads like a threshold. Streets and compounds cluster around the road on the plain, and then the lines thin and begin to curve as the route heads into the hills. In black and white the composition has a strong sense of direction, which fits a place defined by the pass it guards.
The main highway runs through Jamrud and on into the Khyber Pass, the strongest line on the poster and the reason the town exists.
The fort built in 1836 stands beside the road at the edge of town, a compact, walled shape among the surrounding streets.
To the west the flat plain gives way to hills, and roads start to bend and narrow as they climb toward the pass.
