Jinsha lies on the low, level ground of the lower Yangtze region in Jiangsu, near Nantong. Land and water have been managed side by side here for a long time. On a map the town reads as a compact centre, surrounded by a lattice of straight roads and narrow waterways that divide the surrounding land into long rectangular parcels.
This is a delta landscape with no hills to bend the streets. The pattern comes from drainage and irrigation channels, from newer roads laid out on straight alignments, and from the steady outward growth of residential and industrial districts. The older core is denser and less regular. Newer areas show the larger blocks typical of recent development in the region.
