José de Freitas lies in the north of Piauí state in northeastern Brazil, a short drive north of the state capital, Teresina. From above, the town is a fairly regular grid of long blocks. The main roads connect it with Teresina and nearby municipalities, and the edges of the town open into farmland, scrub and scattered rural settlements.
The layout is typical of inland towns in the Brazilian northeast. Straight streets, a central area with a church and main square, and newer neighbourhoods spread out in lower-density blocks. The land is mostly flat, so the grid continues without much disruption. Watercourses and ponds appear here and there and give the map a few soft, irregular shapes.
